Hands up who remembers the 1980’s cartoon Inspector Gadget? Go, go gadget arms! He had a gadget for everything, and despite being a bit, well, dim, he always came out on top – mostly thanks to his amazing gadget technology.
I am a bit of a gadget girl, and have a particular soft spot for kitchen gadgets… I am currently swooning over a Kitchenaid mixer. I have a perfectly good hand held mixer, and a blender/processor that do the job just fine, but, well, it’s just so pretty! And anything that makes life easier has to be worth it, right?
I could do with a few gadgets to make my life easier at the moment – does anyone have a gadget that can give me an extra few hours in each day? Another six or so would be very handy. I seem to have so much to do at the moment – work, housework, shopping (groceries, not the fun kind), an endless round of ironing, not to mention all the extras I need to do to get ready for our holiday. Maybe a gadget to search for the best value sat nav or car hire would be good. Or something that could wash, iron, fold and put away all the washing – there is so much more to do with two football-loving boys.
I do feel rather lucky to live in an age where we do have machines and devices to take the hard work out of housework. Can you imagine living before washing machines and having to scrub the mud and grass stains out of all their clothes? It would take forever! And then there would be no chance of tumble drying them if it was raining. Or not having a freezer? That would make bulk shopping a bit tough… I freeze so much, be it meals I have made batches of to use when we have less time, or bread that I have bought price reduced at the supermarket.
It’s impossible to choose one gadget that I couldn’t live without, but I think if I had to I would go for the basics. The fridge, freezer and washing machine. TV, phones and computers are great, but they provide more distraction than actual usefulness. We could live quite easily without them (in fact, try it for a day – it’s actually quite liberating). But living for a week without a fridge? Now that would be a challenge!
